I was raised in Wilmington, and I grew up in East Wilmington and Wrightsville Sound, and I’m a 1984 graduate of New Hanover High School. I have been married to my wife Laura for 36 years, and we have 4 amazing daughters, 2 sons-in-law and 2 handsome grandsons.
Public service is a part of my family's DNA. My father Jonathan Barfield, Sr. served as New Hanover County’s first African American County Commissioner, serving from 1980 until 1992. Watching my father’s commitment to the public definitely fueled my desire to serve in public office, and I had the privilege of serving as a New Hanover County Commissioner for 16 years, serving from December 2008 until December 2024. During that time I served as Chair 4 times and Vice Chair 3 times. During that time, I built great relationships with elected officials and community leaders throughout this region that will aid me greatly in serving as Wilmington’s next Mayor.
I’m a believer in Servant Leadership, serving the needs of others, and my faith helps guide me as a compass to keep me on the right course.
In my free time I enjoy walking, biking, and a good cigar.
